Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a condition where the large intestine, or colon, fail to function properly. It has also been called spastic colitis or nervous indigestion. The symptoms range from and can include all of the following: abdominal pain; frequent and debilitating diarrhea which can occur soon after eating and can come on quickly; alternating constipation and diarrhea; painful gas; and nausea. The causes of IBS are often food allergies, emotional stress, and a lack of healthy dietary fiber.

It is important to consult a qualified alternative healthcare provider if you suspect IBS as there are other conditions which can present themselves and show similar symptoms such as: cancer; diverticulitis; Candida infestation; severe lack of healthy bacteria in the gut; adrenal insufficiency; and diabetes.

Often IBS can be relieved by eliminating foods that are at the root cause and increasing the amount of healthy dietary fiber.  Read the sections on nutrition and allergies for more information. People who have dairy allergies or are lactose intolerant can display the symptoms of IBS after eating an ice cream desert for example.

Peppermint oil delivered in enteric-coated capsules taken twice daily with meals has  proven to be beneficial for some people with IBS in addition to eliminating meals high in sugar and foods proven to cause allergic reactions. Also supplementation of healthy bacteria such as lactobacillus acidophilus can be helpful in restoring a healthy level of beneficial bacteria to the gut.
